Monitoring of the Hydrothermal System of Solfatara Volcano

During the project, the following methodologies and monitoring procedures have been performed at Solfatara by the GEOWARN partner OVNI (Osservatorio Vesuviano Napoli, Italy):

  • Periodical sampling of the fumaroles; e.g. BG and BN (see Fig. 45);
  • Monitoring of the strong degassing process that affect the area;
  • Monitoring of of diffuse emission of hydrothermal fluids and thermal energy by the application of three different methods;
  • Continuous monitoring of CO2 fluxes and environmental parameters by two automated stations (called FLXOV1 and FLXOV3);
  • Periodical campaigns of CO2 flux measurements on 30 fixed sites located inside Solfatara crater. A positive peak of these data was observed in August 2000 concurrently with increased seismic activity;
  • Detailed campaigns of CO2 flux measurements on about 200 points distributed in a regular grid, 20 m spaced, inside Solfatara crater (Figs. 46 and 47).
