The Volcanic History
The Basal Volcanic Complex (ca. 160,000 to 100,000 years) The Early Caldera Stratovolcano (ca. 100,000 to 30,000 years)On top of these submarine to subaerial lavas, a 500 to 700 m high volcano grew
over a period of more than 50,000 years. Its basaltic, andesitic, dacitic and
rhyodacitic lavas, pyroclastics and tuffs form the northwestern, southern and
northeastern slopes of the island.
